An American Company is seeking a Lead Scientist in Rockville, MD.

Role Description

A small cancer therapeutics start-up company focused on developing drugs that target cancer stem cells. We are developing a pipeline of drug candidates that disrupt the dangerous properties of cancer stem cells with the goal of improving the lives of cancer patients.

We are seeking a highly motivated, curious, innovative and team-oriented scientist to lead our Biology research group and to contribute to our drug development efforts at all stages, from initial hit characterization and mechanism of action studies to patient responses during clinical trials.

The main responsibilities of the Lead Scientist will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Represent us as the subject matter expert internally and to external stakeholders
• Accountable for achieving our research goals for the lead candidates in development by applying diverse scientific approaches.
• Make major contributions to the scientific direction of the company
• Set priorities for programs in consultation with senior management
• Propose strategies for and model the possibility of using targets and/or mechanisms into new areas
• Develop new workflows for research team that will improve experimental results and efficiency
• Apply and/or develop new technologies, and concepts to advance all research initiative
• Manage the biology research team o Responsible for management and professional development of the research group. Establish a good work environment and encourage collaboration, prepare employee evaluations, and participate in hiring strategy discussions and hiring process
• Report management’s goals, priorities, and timelines to research team
• Responsible for the laboratory operations and research group trainings on safety practices
• Coordinate, along with the Chemistry group, the nomination, and transition of lead drug candidates for advancement into clinical trials
• Propose and lead manuscripts for scientific journals and conferences, patent applications, and Investigational New Drug (IND) applications.
• Oversees drafting of patents and leads the identification of new intellectual property
• Play an active role in determining scientific budget and resource allocations

Skills & Requirements

• PhD or MD or MD/PhD in cancer biology, biochemistry or related discipline, with >12 years research experience, including industry experience in drug development
• Candidates must have experience in leading mechanism of action studies for small molecules
• Bioinformatics experience is strongly preferred
• Demonstrated record of productivity evidenced by publications and/or patents
• Highly organized and collaborative individual with an ability to work in fast paced work environments
• Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Excitement for working with a small team in a start-up atmosphere; readiness to develop management and business skills as the company’s needs grow
• Candidates with experience in IND enabling studies for clinical trials will be given priority
