An American Company is seeking an Application Engineering Manager in Chicago, IL.

Role Description

In this role, you will lead teams of application developers, working to build high value products and services for company and its members. This will be on the Clinical Data Quality side of the company business, which is primarily focused on improving the hospital experience of their hospital clients. This includes patient experience, time to heal, patient demographics, what were their injuries, what procedures were performed, how long were they in the hospital, what was done to the patient, etc. Using this data, company builds machine learning outcomes to predict what the patient experience will be, and even if the patients are likely to survive. As the data engineers put this data together into a database, it’s the application Developers job to create dashboards and other products for their hospitals clients to use. Most of the applications this team is working on will be customer-facing then, with the hospitals being the customer.

The Application Engineering Manager will lead 2-3 such teams, with about 12-15 direct reports all together. We are looking for someone who is hands-on, who came up through development in .Net, Java, or both, and can be both a technical and a people leader for the department.

• Supports high-level technical solutioning, estimating initiatives in the pipeline.
• Makes hands-on design, development and architectural contributions to assigned team(s).
• Plays the functional role of Engineering Owner for small to medium sized development teams.
• Mentors and coaches on Agile and Engineering practices.
• Encourages shared team ownership of projects, products, applications, and problem/issue resolution. Be available as a player/coach and guide.
• Acts as an escalation point for production high severity issues as needed.
• Supports the annual budgeting process, helping with estimations, feasibility, scheduling, capability, etc.
• Plays a role in guilds, cohorts, and other enterprise initiatives.
• Hires, onboards, manages, leads, coaches and develops a team of software/quality engineers.

Skills & Requirements

This role would focus on providing hands-on leadership to one or more team of software/quality engineers to build high value products and services for company and its members. This role will be involved in fifty percent hands on activities to guide teams on best practices, non-functional requirement implementation.

• Relevant degree preferred.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field. Any combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
• 8 plus years of total work experience in software application development with some experience leading teams.
• At least 5 years progressive experience with various web application development platforms needed.
• Knowledge and experience on web application development is required.
• Skills on SQL, Microsoft .Net, Java, and front-end frameworks (Angular preferred) are required. This role will be managing teams that work with both .Net and Java, so someone who has experience in both would be preferred, but not 100% necessary.
• Experience in Azure cloud application platform is required.
